Penn State Football’s offensive line levels up as JB Nelson commits
Penn State Football’s offensive line took another major step forward Friday, as JB Nelson announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions
Penn State football added another piece to their 2022 recruiting class on Friday when JUCO offensive lineman JB Nelson committed to the Nittany Lions.
He announced the decision on Twitter Friday afternoon, kicking off what promises to be a big weekend for Penn State Football recruiting’s 2022 class.
This was a brief recruitment for the Lackawanna Community College standout, as he received his Penn State offer in June while at a football camp at the school. Needless to say, he impressed offensive line coach Phil Trautwein and head coach James Franklin with his performance and size.
The 6-foot-5 and 310 pound lineman joins teammate Tyrece Mills in the recruiting class. The two are continuing a long line of recruiting success for Penn State at Lackawanna.
Nelson currently does not have a composite ranking, but 247 Sports ranks him as a 3-star. He also holds offers from Maryland, North Carolina State, Ole Miss and West Virginia.
He is originally out of Pittsburgh and played at Mt. Lebanon High School. According to a 2019 article by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Nelson went the JUCO route due to academic issues.
With Nelson aboard, the Nittany Lions now have 13 commits in the 2022 class. He joins 4-star Drew Shelton in the offensive line haul. It’s looking more likely that Penn State will now take four to five offensive lineman in 2022, meaning they’ll have to take one less than originally expected at a different position.
Considering 201 signee Nate Bruce is no longer with the program, Landon Tengwall is the only offensive lineman from that cycle left. It’s not a bad idea to grab as many linemen as possible in this cycle.
James Franklin has had plenty of success with Lackawanna recruits, most notably his current starting safety Jaquan Brisker. He’s doubling down on the JUCO powerhouse again by taking Mills and Nelson in 2022.
Nelson is the second commit the Nittany Lions have received following the June visit frenzy, with wide receiver Tyler Johnson being the other.
Penn State’s 2022 class stays at eight in the national rankings due to Nelson not having a composite ranking yet. They do move from eleven to nine in the 247 Spots rankings.
