NCAA Wrestling: Ranking 2021-2022 weight classes

Parity R Us – No. 2
157
2021 Top 4
1. David Carr (So.) Iowa State
2. Jesse Dellavecchia (Sr.) Rider
3. Ryan Deakin (Sr.) Northwestern
4. Jacori Teemer (So.) Arizona State
Just like the 149 class, the group at 157 also saw few upsets in the 2021 NCAA’s as all four top seeded wrestlers made the semi finals. But this is where the similarities stop.
In a shocking turn of events, Rider’s Jesse Dellavecchia caught the No. 1 seed Ryan Deakin in a spot he is never in. On his back. Dellavecchia earned the fall 3:18 into the semi finals match and punched his ticket to the finals.
The upsets then continued as Iowa State’s David Carr dispatched the No. 2 seed Hayden Hidlay in a close 6-4 decision, thus setting up a 3/4 final at 157.
David Carr cruised to a comfortable* 4-0 victory over Dellavecchia to take home his first NCAA title. To make the victory even sweeter, David did so 40 years after his father, Nate Carr, also won an NCAA title.
The 157 group also saw a lower seed make the 3rd place match as Arizona State’s No. 11 seed Jacori Teemer caught a heater in the wrestlebacks. Ryan Deakin got all he could handle in a barnburner 1-0 decision to finish on the podium and spoil Teemer’s upset bid.
I still believe this is Ryan Deakin’s weight class to win going into next season. But my goodness is this weight class stacked. And something tells me David Carr would like for me to eat my own words while going for the repeat.
I’m also going to guess seniors Hayden Hidlay and Jesse Dellavecchia and the up and coming sophomore Jacori Teemer would like a say in this as well.
