NCAA Wrestling: Ranking 2021-2022 weight classes
By Chris Snyder
Things could be interesting? But probably not – No. 3
133
2021 Top 4
1. Roman Bravo-Young (Jr.) Penn State
2. Daton Fix (So.) Oklahoma State
3. Austin DeSanto (Sr.) Iowa
4. Korbin Myers (Sr.) Virginia Tech
While I think 133 could be a very interesting group to watch in the 2021-2022 season, I do not believe a new champion will be crowned.
RBY continues to improve each year and all of his hard work culminated this past season. After taking home his first ever B1G Championship, Roman then bested Oklahoma State’s Daton Fix in the finals of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
As with Lee, I don’t think there’s any stopping Bravo-Young in the upcoming season. And as with Brooks, RBY won’t necessarily face a relentless group of grapplers in the B1G at 133.
Austin DeSanto has beaten RBY in the past, but this came back in 2019. Since then, Roman is 3-0 against him. The freshman duo of Lucas Byrd (Illinois) and Chris Cannon (Northwestern) could be interesting to watch, but I still don’t believe they will be anywhere close to RBY even with significant improvement.
Which leaves Daton Fix. He was the final hurdle between RBY and an NCAA title last season. And I think the same is going to ring true this season. But even for a guy as talented and strong as Fix, it’s almost impossible to match Bravo-Young’s explosiveness and quickness.
Which leads to our last weight class in this group.
