Jalen Pickett announced he will transfer to Penn State Basketball, according to ESPN’s Jeff Borzello.

Listed as “one of the best available point guards”, Pickett was also contacted by Michigan, Gonzaga and Baylor.

“I really just trust Micah Shrewsberry,” Pickett The Siena transfer told ESPN,   I love the vision, the direction he’s taking, how he wants to play…(he) and (Coach) Fisher were really on me this whole recriting process.”

The former Siena point guard checks in at 6-foot-4, and won the MAAC Player of the Year in 2020 when he averaged 15.1 points, 4.6 rebounds and 6.0 assists.

Those numbers were actually down from Pickett’s freshman year campaign, where he averaged 15.8, 4.6 and 6.7.

Pickett unfortunately had a hamstring injury this year, resulting in lower numbers (12.9, 6.3 and 4.8) but he said that he, ” … Started the season really well (and) I’m perfectly fine now. This gives me a whole summer to work.  And hopefuly there’s no COVID pauses this year.”

It’s quite posisble that the starting backcourt for Penn State Basketball will be transfer players as it’s quite likely Pickett will compete with, and/or perhaps enter the summer slotted as the starter over, Sam Sessoms.

Sessoms, a transfer himself from Binghamton, averaged 8.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in approximately 21 minutes per game.  Pickett may find himself next to Jaheam “Boogie” Cornwall, the transfer from Gardner-Webb.  The 2021-2022 roster now looks like:

PG — Jalen Pickett, Sam Sessoms

SG — Jaheam Cornwall

SF — Seth Lundy, Myles Dread

PF — um?

C — John Harrar, Abdou Tsimbila

Look for Micah Shrewsberry to find some frontcourt depth in the transfer portal next as he works to complete the 2021-2022 roster.
