Looking back at the 5 biggest surprises of Penn State Wrestling’s 2021 season

Now that the confetti has been swept up, and the beer cans have been dumped into the recycling bin after last week’s Saturday night celebration, let’s take a look back on Penn State Wrestling’s 2021 season.

More specifically, what were the biggest surprises?

And no, me not breaking my tv during the Eierman/Lee match in the B1G finals was not one of them.

Biggest Surprise No. 1

They finished the season

I know sports fans already witnessed the first hurdle in major collegiate sports during a pandemic. Which was college football having a season and ultimately crowning a playoff champion in the end.

But boy, there sure were some giant speed bumps along the way as 139 D1 regular season games were canceled and more than a handful of bowl games.

And it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Penn State Wrestling either, as they had three of their dual meets canceled while only competing in six.

The bottom line though? The 2021 season had a beginning, it had a middle, and it had an end.

All of the B1G wrestling programs were able to compete in the B1G Championships. Credit to the B1G conference and certainly credit to all of the B1G wrestling programs to make that happen.

The same goes for the NCAA Championships.

I don’t normally like to give any kind of credit to the NCAA, but they did an excellent job for the wrestling championships. Because of their hard work and the hard work of the teams, each of the respective wrestling teams were able to send a total of 330 wrestlers to St. Louis and not a single positive Covid result for the entire weekend.

This was surprising, for sure.
