Penn State Wrestling’s No. 12 seed Brady Berge injured while competing in the 157 quarter final match against Rider’s No. 4 Jesse Dellavecchia in the NCAA Championships
Penn State Wrestling’s chances of winning a team-championship took a hit Friday, as more consequentially, Brady Berge suffered an injury.
Action early in the 1st period was limited as both wrestlers were working to feel each other out.
Dellavecchia was able to land a single leg on Berge near the lower-right boundary line and he then worked it into a takedown. Normal stuff, right?
Not this time.
Berge appeared to land awkwardly on his left leg and Dellavecchia, the official, and everyone in attendance knew he was immediately injured. As the trainer was attending to Brady, coach Cael Sanderson sat by his side trying to talk with him.
However Berge was clearly in excruciating pain. After a couple of minutes of work from the trainer, Brady was helped to his feet and as soon as he took a step on his left leg he crumpled down to the mat.
Injury forfeit.
I can’t stop shaking my head. I just can’t. I mean look, I understand injuries happen in sports and wrestling is no exception. The amount of force, torque, and pressure put on virtually every joint in the body during a wrestling match is boggling.
I just can’t believe it’s happened to Brady Berge once again.
While wrestling in the U23 World Championships back in October 2019, Berge suffered a severe head injury which effectively wiped out his entire 2019-2020 season. Just as things were looking like they were about to take off for him following a 10-2 season in 2018-2019.
Berge is one of the more decorated wrestlers on the entire Penn State team.
Brady won 3 Minnesota state title in high school and was on his way to winning a 4th when he lost in the semi finals due to an injury. Do you know how many losses that gave Berge in his high school career? 1.
Myself and the Penn State faithful wish nothing but the best for Brady Berge and I certainly hope his injury isn’t anything serious.
Rest up, heal up, and show the world how good you can be at Penn State, Brady. We’ll all pulling for you.
