Micah Shrewsberry: From Jayson Tatum’s shooting coach to Penn State Basketball’s head man
By Evan Smith
The guru behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s shooting prowess … and friendship
Micah Shrewsberry was a personal shooting coach for now NBA All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and actually aided in their friendship, according to Andrew Hughes of Hardwood Houdini.
It’s fair to say that Shrewsberry made a significant impact on Tatum, who shot a career-high 47.5 percent from the field as a rookie, and is a prolific NBA scorer, averaging 18.3 points and 6.1 rebounds through his career.
Shrewsberry spent five seasons on the Celtics’ bench as an assistant coach, from 2013 to 2019, before returning to the Boilermakers, where he spent the past two seasons.
A shooting coach is an interesting aspect of the Shrewsberry hire, and not one you hear of every day.
You can start drooling thinking about Myreon Jones and Seth Lundy becoming the next Brown and Taytum … okay, that may be a bit of a stretch. Step one for Shrewsberry is getting those guys to stay with the program next year.
But, it’s nice to know Penn State Basketball’s new head coach knows about shooting … and cultivating personal relationships.
