It seems Penn State Basketball has settled on their next head coach, current Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry.
Shrewsberry will move east from Purdue where he worked under Matt Painter for the last two seasons and also worked for the Boilermakers from 2011 to 2013. Micah also has a lot of NBA experience, following Brad Stevens from Butler to the Boston Celtics.
As the move seems official, Purdue currently has a “404 error” on the page that used to profile Shrewsberry.
Penn State Athletics Director Sandy Barbour said she wanted to work quickly on a new hire. With the NIT choosing not to select Penn State yesterday, the season officially came to a close. With this announcement just over 12 hours after the NIT didn’t extend that invite, this timing will certainly give credance to those wondering if Sandy Barbour asked the NIT not to invite Penn State so she could close the book on the Chambers era once and for all.
Shrewsberry had been a leading candidate throughout this coaching search, with rumors Sandy Barbour even stayed in Indianapolis after the Big Ten Touranment to finalze the contract with Micah. The Board of Trustees will be meeting this week to discuss “compensation”, which will likley be the approval of this contract.
We are certainly entering a new era of Penn State Basketball. Let’s see what happens next with potential seniors returning and every player in the country allowed to transfer freely.
