Penn State Basketball overcomes 16-point deficit, topples Maryland
By Evan Smith
Penn State Basketball fell behind big early, but the Lions made an incredible second half comeback to win 66-61 and complete the season sweep of Maryland.
Maryland got off to a 12-0 start as the Lions missed all kind of shots. Seth Lundy was the Nittany Lions‘ only scorer for the first 12 minutes and 35 seconds and he finished with 14 first half points. The Lions cut the lead to 6 late in the first half but a brutal no call on a Brockington drive (even the B1G Network announcer said he was fouled twice) allowed the Terps to get into the half up 10 with the Lions shooting just 28%.
A four-point play from Lundy and three free throws from Jones cut the deficit to 5 and the Lions got as close as three but a Maryland run pushed it right back to 11. A wide open jumper from Myreon Jones clanged off the rim with 4:44 down 4 and Maryland scored right back to open it back to 6 followed by a brutal jump ball call (again the BTN color announcer felt it was such a bad call he had to comment on it) giving the ball back to Maryland. Sigh. But, a Lundy three and Harrar free throws cut the Maryland lead to 1 with 1:52 left.
Another Maryland miss and Seth floater in the lane gave the LIONS THEIR FIRST LEAD, 58-57 with 1:14 to go! What a comeback showing some SERIOUS heart. Say what you will about this team, but man they give it their all. Great defense by Myles Dread forced a fade away jumper miss and Ferry called timeout with the Lions up 1, 53 seconds left. A lot of dribbling and passing led to an end of clock three from Mr. Seth Lundy WHO BURIED IT! Lions up 4, 26 seconds left!! Penn State Basketball made their free throws and that is that. Season sweep of Maryland, complete!
