No. 3 Carter Starocci (PSU) vs. No. 1 Michael Kemerer (IOWA)

Kemerer dec. Starocci, 7-2

Much of the first period saw both wrestlers feeling each other out as the two traded half-hearted shots. Kemerer finally committed on an attempt and quickly took the lead with a takedown late in the 1st period (0-2). But Starocci was able to escape prior to the period ending (1-2).

Carter started in the top position to start the 2nd period and worked hard to keep Kemerer in his grasp. It was just a matter of time as Kemerer wriggled free (1-3) and both wrestlers were on their feet. Starocci got in deep with a single leg shot but Kemerer was able to lower his hips and fight out.

Another deep shot appeared to hit home for Starocci however Kemerer was somehow able to reach underneath and behind to grab an ankle pick of his own. He then used this to turn Starocci over on the mat to earn the takedown and 2 near fall points (1-7). Crap.

The 3rd period started with Carter on bottom and he quickly earned the escape (2-7). But the remaining time ticked away in the 3rd period as Kemerer prevented Carter from doing anything. I’ll Kemerer credit for at least attempting to wrestle as opposed to Eierman.

Carter Starocci is going to do some great things at Penn State, he’ll learn from this loss, get better, work hard, and move forward.
