B10 quarterback rankings: How does Penn State Football stack up?
5. Wisconsin Badgers
Wisconsin started true freshman Graham Mertz last season after the 2019 starter Jack Coan was ruled out with an injury for the season.
Mertz is a former four-star recruit, ranked the 65th best player in the class of 2019 by 247sports and was seen as the savior by Badgers fans. Mertz’s season got off to a hot start but Covid-19 issues derailed him a bit.
He finished the season with rather pedestrian numbers, throwing for 1,238 yards and nine touchdowns to five interceptions in seven games played. He threw five touchdown passes in the season opener against lowly Illinois, but only four the rest of the season.
Wisconsin is devoid of any real threats on the outside and without their usual dominant running game, Mertz looks like more of a game manager than the Heisman candidate some thought he could be early on.
