The B1G Wrestling Championships set for March 6-7 are right around the corner, so let’s rank Penn State’s Wrestling’s championship contenders heading into the tournament

All right wrestling fans, we’re heading into the final and most exciting stretch of the 2021 B1G wrestling season.

With Penn State Wrestling set to host the upcoming B1G Championships on March 6-7th, let’s dive into their possible title contenders and predict how the key matches shake out.

I’ll break these down into three groups. Starting with…

I just don’t see it happening

Sorry, but even I have to take off my blue & white colored shades and put down the Nittany Lion Kool-aid when looking at any of these guys taking home a title. We’ll start with the 125 group.

125 Robbie Howard
B1G Top 5 125
No. 1 Spencer Lee (Iowa)
No. 7 Dylan Ragusin (Michigan)
No. 8 Liam Cronin (Nebraska)
No. 9 Malik Heinselman (Ohio State)
No. 11 Eric Barnett (Wisconsin)

As I stated in my 5 Keys to Penn State Winning the National Championship, Iowa’s Spencer Lee owns 125 and he’s not going to let anyone take it from him. Sorry Robbie, your time will come. But, it’s not going to be this year.

165 No. 17 Joe Lee
B1G Top 5 165
No. 1 Alex Marinelli (Iowa)
No. 8 Danny Braunagel (Illinois)
No. 10 Ethan Smith (Ohio State)
No. 14 Cameron Amine (Michigan)
No. 16 Andrew Sparks (Minnesota)

Same as with 125, Iowa’s Alex “Bull” Marinelli is the cream of the crop at 165.

Sorry, Penn State fans, if I’m giving Iowa too much praise here, I can’t say anything other than “It’s deserved”. Joe Lee currently sits just outside of the top 5 in the B1G and what I’m most intrigued about is how will we fair against competition he has previously faced and lost to? Ethan Smith pinned him in Columbus on 2/19 and Cameron Amine was too much to handle in a 6-12 decision in Ann Arbor on 2/12.

197 No. 15 Michael Beard
B1G Top 5 197
No. 1 Eric Shultz (Nebraska)
No. 2 Myles Amine (Michigan)
No. 3 Jacob Warner (Iowa)
No. 12 Cameron Caffey (Michigan State)
No. 15 Michael Beard (Penn State)

While Beard does make it into the top 5 of the B1G’s 197 group, just look at what’s at the top. Yep. It’s a gauntlet for sure.

Moving on to our next tier!
