Tight End

Penn State lost 4-star tight end Holden Staes shortly after Tyler Bowen took a job with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

They were able to hold onto the other 4-star in the class, Jerry Cross.

Penn State doesn’t have to fill the void left by Staes, it was more of a luxury to take both Cross and Staes than a necessity. All four of the tight ends currently on the roster, Theo Johnson, Brenton Strange, Tyler Warren and Khalil Dinkins are all expected to be on the roster in 2022.

There aren’t many targets remaining on the tight end board. Two of Penn State’s targets, Bennett Christian and Benji Gosnell committed to Ohio State after Staes chose the Nittany Lions.

It’s not likely that Penn State can get one of those two to flip from Ohio State.

One target still out there is 3-star Micah Riley out of Nebraska. Chances are Penn State will expand this board and offer more tight ends down the road if they feel the need to take another.

It will be interesting to see new tight ends coach Ty Howle handles his first go around as a recruiter. Keeping Cross interested will be his biggest challenge.
