Key match No. 2

157 – No. 19 Brady Berge vs No. 8 Will Lewan

Grade – A

Things got started off with both Berge and Lewan feeling each other out for the entire first period (0-0). Berge started the second period on top and Lewan got on the board with a quick escape (0-1).

Similar to the first period, both wrestlers finished the second on their feet squaring up, but neither guy could get any penetration.

The third period started with Berge in the down position, and just like Lewan, he earned the quick escape (1-1) to tie the match.

Berge finally got penetration and earned an ankle pick takedown (3-1) with 35 seconds left in the match. He rode out Lewan for the remaining time and got the 3-1 decision over Lewan to give PSU 3 more points.

Slow match alert!

Yeah, this wasn’t the most exciting wrestling match I’ve witnessed. Both guys seemed hesitant to commit to anything other than “I’m going to sort of make a move and then see what the other guy does” for most of the match.

Anyway you slice it, Berge pulled this one out and he’s continuing to show signs he can be a top tier wrestler in the Big Ten.
