Penn State Football alumni struggled to contain their enthusiasm over head coach James Franklin hiring Ty Howle as tight end coach Friday.

Howle returns to his alma mater to coach tight ends after playing center from 2009 to 2013 for the Nittany Lions.

"“We are excited to have Ty represent his alma mater and serve as our tight ends coach,” Franklin said in a statement announcing his hiring. “I have known Ty since I first arrived at Penn State when he worked in our recruiting department. Since then, I’ve watched him grow into an impressive coach and a tremendous leader of men.”"

Howle replaces Tyler Bowen, who accepted a position on Urban Meyer’s coaching staff with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. Following in Bowen’s footsteps both in terms of setting the standard for the tight end room but also as a recruiter, will be among the biggest challenges for the 29-year old.

The Nittany Lions’ tight end group has the chance to be among the more dominant in the country, headlined by former five-star recruit Theo Johnson, Brenton Strange, and Zack Kuntz.

“Penn State University means the world to my family and me,” Howle tweeted Friday. “The pride I have for the university, this team, my letterman brothers, and the greatest fans in the world is unrivaled.”

If the reaction from former Penn State Football standouts is any indication, the youngest member of Franklin’s coaching staff is going to do just fine in Happy Valley …
