Mehki Flowers Commits to Penn State Football
Penn State Football’s new year got off to a great start on Friday when Mehki Flowers announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions.
Mehki Flowers, a 4-star athlete in the 2022 recruiting cycle, announced his commitment to Penn State Football on Instagram.
With Flowers in the fold, the Nittany Lions now posses the second ranked class in the nation for the 2022 cycle. Flowers is the eighth member of the class, all of them are composite 4-stars.
Flowers, from Harrisburg, is the fifth Pennsylvanian to join the ’22 class. James Franklin and his staff look well on their way to taking back recruiting dominance in the state.
Flowers is being recruited as an athlete, the two options for him are wide receiver and safety. His speed and physicality will play well at either position.
If he is a receiver in college, the 6’1 187 pound Flowers will join a unit that is on its way to being one of the best on the team. With true freshmen Parker Washington and Keandre Lambert-Smith playing well this season, three 4-stars committed in 2021 in Liam Clifford, Harrison Wallace and Lonnie White Jr., and two fellow ’22 4-stars in Kaden Saunders and Anthony Ivey, the future is bright.
With all that young talent in mind, Flowers may be more helpful to the Nittany Lions on the defensive side. There are two safety signees in the 2021 class in Jaylen Reed and Zakee Wheatly, but long-time top target Derrick Davis Jr. signed with LSU in December. There are some safety targets that Penn State could land in 2022 that will keep Flowers on offense, but no commits to date.
Either way, there’s a long way to go before that decision. Expect Flowers to play a role on special teams as well.
Penn State needed to get back to bringing in top end talent, especially from within the state. Flowers is ranked as the 112th best player in the cycle according to 247 Sports, so the staff accomplished just that here.
The hope is that Penn State can continue this momentum with other top 2022 targets and have the “stay home” movement be a factor in the recruitment of 5-star DE Enai White and other top targets.
Regardless of what position he ends up at, Flowers is a big get.
