Penn State Football once again reached into the transfer portal, this time for former Duke defensive tackle Derrick Tangelo

For the second time this week, Penn State Football has secured the commitment of a transfer.

Derrick Tangelo, a defensive tackle from Duke, announced his intentions to play at Penn State on Tuesday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2 and 310 pound Tangelo is coming off his third season as a starter for Duke. According to Duke’s website, Tangelo had 40 tackles, four for loss and two sacks this season. He also forced three fumbles.

Tangelo fills the void left by Antonio Shelton, who decided to go else where for his sixth season. Tangelo will most likely start for the Nittany Lions, next to P.J. Mustipher.

The Nittany Lions also lost Judge Culpepper via the transfer portal, so it was vital to bring in another experienced player after losing two guys who saw plenty of action in 2020. Tangelo, Mustipher, Hakeem Beamon and Fred Hansard are expected to be at the top of Penn State’s defensive tackle rotation in 2021.

Tangelo becomes the third key transfer pick up for James Franklin and his staff this off season. Earlier this month, they picked up Baylor running back John Lovett and South Carolina defensive back Johnny Dixon this week.

Unlike Lovett and Dixon, Tangelo did not have a Penn State offer during his recruitment back in 2017. They did know about him though, because he attended The Bullis School in Maryland, a place the Nittany Lions have recruited before. Former Penn State linebacker, now with the New York Giants, Cam Brown, was a teammate of Tangelo’s at The Bullis School.

The Nittany Lions seem to be targeting players that they have some familiarity with from the recruiting process.

Penn State’s hot streak in the transfer portal isn’t expected to end with Tangelo.

The Nittany Lions are still looking for multiple defensive ends, along with possibly a safety, offensive lineman and quarterback.
