4 times the Penn State Nittany Lions have shocked Ohio State
October 22, 2016: Penn State 24, No. 2 Ohio State 21
Once again going into a huge game against Ohio State unranked, the Penn State Nittany Lions had the luxury of playing inside Beaver Stadium on October 22, 2016. Heading into the matchup, Penn State had looked terrible weeks earlier, getting trounced by Michigan by the score of 49-10.
They would reel off two straight wins against Minnesota and Maryland heading into this one, setting the stage for over 107,000 strong inside Beaver Stadium welcoming the Buckeyes to town. Falling behind 21-7 entering the fourth quarter, the Nittany Lions needed a miracle, and they certainly got one.
Trace McSorley pulled the team within seven with a two-yard score, before a Tyler Davis field goal from 34-yards out had Penn State fans thinking the impossible. The impossible happened when Grant Haley returned a blocked field goal 60 yards for a touchdown to give Penn State their only lead of the game with under five minutes to go, a lead they would not relinquish.
The win would propel the Nittany Lions to a six-game winning streak to end the season, and while they lost in an instant classic against USC in the Rose Bowl to end the year, they still finished as the No. 7 team in the country. Ohio State would make it to the CFP that season, getting embarrassed by Clemson 31-0, which would be their only loss outside of the Penn State game.
