4 times the Penn State Nittany Lions have shocked Ohio State
October 8, 2005: No. 16 Penn State 17, No. 6 Ohio State 10
The 2005 Penn State Nittany Lions were a talented team, but heading into their matchup against No. 6 Ohio State, they were only ranked No. 16 in the country. Penn State got out to a 5-0 start to the 2005 campaign, including a drubbing of then-No. 18 ranked Minnesota.
College Gameday was on the scene for this rivalry game, and playing in front of a White Out crowd, Penn State sent over 107,000 fans home happy. Their 17-10 victory over Ohio State put them in the conversation of possibly being a national championship team, thanks to an incredible finish inside Beaver Stadium.
Tamba Hali’s sack at midfield, causing a fumble that was recovered by Scott Paxson allowed Penn State to run out the clock. Star linebacker Paul Posluszny finished the game with 14 tackles and a sack, and though they would fall to Michigan the following week, they still would end up winning the Big Ten title.
The 2005 squad finished the season ranked No. 3 in the country in both the AP an Coaches poll, thanks to an exciting 3-OT win against Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Ohio State would end up finishing the season ranked one spot below Penn State at No. 4, beating Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
