4 times the Penn State Nittany Lions have shocked Ohio State
November 7, 1964: Penn State 27, No. 2 Ohio State 0
A year after shocking Penn State in the 1963 campaign, the Nittany Lions proved to be the better team once again in a November matchup against their rival. Going into the game as a two-touchdown underdog, the unranked Penn State squad had the tall task of defeating a Buckeyes team that was the No. 2-ranked team in the country.
In 1964, Penn State lost three straight games to open the season, and would go on to lose four of their first five. After beating West Virginia and Maryland to get on track, they headed to Ohio Stadium to face a Buckeyes team led by legendary head coach Woody Hayes, who was in his 14th season at the helm.
What ensued was a good, old-fashioned whooping, as Penn State dominated from the outset thanks to a defensive effort for the ages. The Nittany Lions allowed only five first downs all game long, had two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries, as they stymied the Buckeyes offensive gameplan time and time again.
Don Kunit had two second half touchdowns, leading the team to a 27-0 victory that spring-boarded them the rest of the way. Penn State won five straight to close out the year, allowing only 24 points combined in those games, and would finish up as the No. 14 team in the country.
