4 times the Penn State Nittany Lions have shocked Ohio State

November 9, 1963: Penn State 10, No. 10 Ohio State 7

The 1963 Penn State football team started the season out on the right foot, winning their first three games before a matchup with No. 9 ranked Army. However, the Nittany Lions would lose to Army, and then were shutout against Syracuse, before going on a four-game winning streak that included a victory against Ohio State.

At the time they met up, the Buckeyes were the No. 10 ranked team in the country, and were an obvious favorite over Penn State. In front of 83,000-plus fans inside Ohio Stadium, the Nittany Lions shocked Ohio State thanks to a valiant effort by their defense, including a clutch stop late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Pete Liske was sharp all afternoon long, and the offensive line stood tall, giving Penn State the opportunity to win the game late. After stopping Ohio State at midfield, Liske led the Penn State offense down to the six, where Ron Coates would eventually kick the game-winning field goal.

That Penn State team finished up their season with a 22-21 loss against Pitt in a game that was postponed to December due to John F. Kennedy being assassinated. Overall, they were ranked No. 16 in the coaches’ poll, finishing the year with a 7-3 record in Rip Engle’s 14th season at the helm.
