Penn State football put on upset alert vs. Michigan
Penn State football may be favored against Michigan, but some believe an upset is brewing for this weekend.
Here we are at the point in the college football season where Penn State football begins their toughest matchups. They started off last week in a harsh environment in Iowa City. As the Nittany Lions traveled to Kinnick Stadium for a primetime Saturday night matchup, they were taking on their toughest test to date.
Penn State didn’t blow Iowa out of the water by any means, but they controlled the game once they settled in and ended up coming away with the win. Now, Penn State ranks seventh in the nation with an undefeated record of 6-0.
Fortunately, the Lions are back in Happy Valley this week to host their next big test. The white-out game against the Michigan Wolverines. Being that Michigan is ranked 16th in the nation, with a loss on their record from another Big Ten team, it comes as no surprise that the Nittany Lions are favored in their matchup against the Wolverines this week.
In the eyes of 247 Sports’ Brad Crawford though, Penn State could be primed for a classic upset at home, in front of their white-out crowd.
Penn State on upset alert?
We’ve been in this position before earlier in the season. As Penn State prepared to hit the road to take on Maryland for their first away game of the year, a couple of writers suggested that an upset could be brewing. Then Penn State took down the Terps 59-0.
Will that happen this weekend against Michigan? It’s doubtful. This should be a close game. But the theory of a potential upset surrounds the fact that this week’s matchup is a ‘must-win’ for Michigan, as they already have a loss on their record.
At the same time, though, this game is also a ‘must-win’ for Penn State. In order for the Nittany Lions to stay at the top of the Big Ten Conference, they have to remain unbeaten. With Ohio State and Wisconsin doing the same, Penn State is looking to be the last team standing.
Sure, Michigan probably needs the win more than Penn State does since their head coach is trying to keep his job — but Penn State is not going just to give this one away. After last week, Penn State is battle-tested. They might not be destroying the good teams they play, but they can come out on top with a win by the end, and that’s all that matters.
