Penn State football: Matt McGloin gets second chance with XFL
Former Penn State football quarterback Matt McGloin will get another shot at professional football.
For a moment, former Penn State football quarterback Matt McGloin might’ve figured his playing days are officially over. As NFL teams failed to call over the last few years, McGloin started to transition from the field to the media aspect of the game.
Suddenly though, the former Nittany Lion got a call from the pros. No, McGloin is not headed back to the NFL, unfortunately. Instead, he will get an opportunity to star in football’s newest league, the XFL. For a while now, we’ve been made aware of the XFL’s resurgence.
As we know, the league had existed before but didn’t last very long. Now, their owner Vince McMahon has decided to try and give it another go, even after the failed stint of the AAF, which folded months ago. Hopefully, this time around, though, a new league survives and gives pro football players a second chance to shine outside of the NFL.
This week, the XFL will begin forming teams with a draft. But first, each team was going to get assigned a quarterback to start with. One of the selected quarterbacks just so happens to be Matt McGloin. And now the former Nittany Lion doesn’t have to wait to hear his name called once again, because he’s already been assigned to a team.
Headed to New York…
Out of eight teams, McGloin landed with the New York Guardians. Ironically enough, McGloin mentioned he’s always wanted to play football in New York, according to PennLive’s Greg Pickel. “Being able to play in New York is something I’ve always wanted the chance to do,” McGloin said.
“It allows so many family and friends to make the short drive from home to see me play.” For a while, McGloin seemed to have accepted the fact he wouldn’t be back in the NFL, as he hasn’t been on a final roster since 2016. Although McGloin was happy with his sideline reporting job for Penn State, the former quarterback did mention before that he still has gas in the tank. Well, he will get to prove it now with the XFL.
