Penn State football head coach James Franklin still won’t narrow down the choices in the backfield this season.

We can keep asking Penn State football head coach James Franklin when the team will narrow down the backfield to one or two players being featured on game day. And we’re just going to keep getting the same answers at this point.

It surely doesn’t hurt to ask, though. After all, we see different running backs play better than others every week. For week one, everybody went off and flashed some promise. For week two, nobody really played a good game as Sean Clifford led the team in rushing.

For week three, Journey Brown and Noah Cain played a solid game, while in week four, Brown and Ricky Slade were the highlight of the night before Devyn Ford got some action with the backups.

There’s no denying that Penn State has an incredibly talented backfield. While they all can play, everybody just wants to see some consistency considering what Penn State fans have witnessed from the backfield over the last few years with heavy doses of Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders.

At this point, most would believe that Journey Brown is probably the most consistent player out of the Penn State backfield, but James Franklin is far from ready to hand over a bell-cow role.

As he was asked once again Wednesday, whether the Lions were going to narrow down the carries to one or two guys or not, Franklin responded the same way he’s been responding:

“All four of our backs we like,” Franklin said, according to The Daily Collegian. “We’re gonna keep rotating those guys. We’ve got four backs, and we’re not ready to name ‘a guy.’” That’s pretty much been the standard statement by Franklin through five weeks of football now.

While the Penn State rushing game hasn’t been as dominant on the stat sheets, the small production from each of the four backs has been pretty solid so far. And at the end of the day, Penn State still remains undefeated. You know the saying: “If it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it.”
