Penn State football head coach James Franklin is optimistic about his young team’s progress so far.

The 2019 College Football season was a turn of the page for the Penn State football program. Typically, when a team moves on from a long-term quarterback, it’s always considered a new era. Well, after three long seasons with Trace McSorley at the helm, PSU kickstarted their new era.

It’s not really a secret that Penn State is one of the younger teams around the Big Ten. While they are recognized for their talent and are still considered to be one of the top teams within the conference, many are well aware that their youthfulness could hurt them at some point.

So far, the Nittany Lions haven’t let the inexperience come to bite them just yet though. With an undefeated record of 3-0, Penn State remains unbeaten through their first small stretch of the schedule. While they have shown some slight struggles as they faced adversity over time, they haven’t broken down at all. They stayed strong and prevailed.

Recently, Penn State head coach James Franklin praised his young team for their progress so far. While he recognizes that there is still tons of room for improvement, he appreciates what has been put on display against Idaho, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh.

“I’m very proud of how we’re playing,” Franklin mentioned to the media on Tuesday during his weekly press conference. “I’m not saying we don’t make mistakes, but I’m proud. We’re playing sound and disciplined football.”

Have the Nittany Lions been flawless thus far? Not exactly. However, they do take care of the football, which is a significant plus for such a young offense, run by a first-time starting quarterback. With 75 total passes, Sean Clifford has yet to turn the ball over on game day.

Although there were a couple of fumbles (one lost), there really haven’t been any other instances where Penn State played sloppily. There are surely some growing pains going on, but what has been put on display at this point is undoubtedly promising — and Coach Franklin concurs.
