We know it’s still very early, but what are the projected chances that Penn State football has to make the CFB Playoff right now?

Is it too early for this? Probably. Is it really a big deal to ask, though? Not really. With the college football season now heading into its fourth week, we now know which teams kind of have the “it” factor — and which teams who don’t. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you if Penn State football has it or not, because their first three opponents weren’t a quite top-notch competition.

Through three weeks of playing, the Nittany Lions are undefeated. They have beaten Idaho, Buffalo, and Pitt. Again, not the most impressive stretch of games. Nonetheless, though, Penn State won, and won two of them by a large margin.

Considering they are 3-0 right now, Penn State is getting the respect that they deserve. They started the season off ranked at No. 15, and since their start, they have seen a slight increase to No. 13 on the poll. This week, they won’t have the opportunity to move up since they are off.

Next week will be a different story, though. On Friday, Penn State will get their first conference matchup against Maryland. It won’t be an easy matchup by any means — but Penn State should be able to take care of business. After seeing their last two matchups, Penn State has struggled a bit, which was slightly telling about their team

The talent is undoubtedly there, but the youth has been showing. And because of that, many projections around college football likely don’t have Penn State viewed as legitimate contenders.

Not for this season at least. It would be ideal for the Nittany Lions to claw their way into the College Football Playoff by the end of the year — but their chances do not look so high right now

What are the chances?

According to ESPN, only eight teams have a chance that is above ten percent of making the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, Penn State is not one of those eight teams. Ranked 12th on the list, Penn State comes in with an unfavorable six percent right now.

The good news is that these numbers can change in a big way. After all, it’s only been a few weeks. However, they can also change for the worst too. The chances are, Penn State will have to go undefeated even to be considered, and we already knew that. But they will need some things to go right within the Big Ten Conference as well.

Right now, they have two Big Ten teams ahead of them on the projections. One happens to be the obvious, Ohio State, who has the third-best chances with 44-percent. Wisconsin, on the other hand, tops both Penn State and Michigan with a 13-percent chance. Penn State is third in the Big Ten on there, but they need to focus on themselves winning first.
