Former Penn State football target Antonio Alfano enters transfer portal
Alabama freshman defensive end and former Penn State football target Antonio Alfano entered the NCAA transfer portal this week.
The NCAA transfer portal has caused issues for a handful of teams recently. And Penn State football knows this well as they lost their Trace McSorley replacement, Tommy Stevens back in the spring. However, it has helped them recently as well with their special teams.
And who knows, perhaps it could help them soon once again. Some big news came out on Friday as a star recruit from Alabama popped up in the portal this week. 2019 top prospect, Antonio Alfano is considering switching programs, according to his parents.
As reported by Bama Online, Alfano’s parents released a statement this week explaining the situation. Apparently, Alfano had some personal family issues to tend to over the summer during preseason practices. Therefore, he missed a few sessions for the Crimson Tide.
Despite being a five-star prospect, Alfano wasn’t able to get onto the field during last week’s game. And suddenly, he’s considering a change of programs as he “deals with discipline things.” Although Alfano is in the transfer portal, there’s still a chance he remains at Alabama.
While his parents expressed that they prefer he sticks it out in his current situation, the top-five 2019 prospect has not pulled back on the idea of potentially leaving quite yet.
What’s the significance for Penn State?
Being that Alfano is from Colonia, New Jersey, he was a target on Penn State’s radar. The five-star prospect had 21 offers on the table during his recruitment as he was touted as the number one player not only coming out of New Jersey but also playing defensive end.
There’s no guarantee that Alfano leaves Bama. After all, it was more than clear that he was head over heels for the program before. But it looks as though things have taken a bit of a turn at this point, and he might consider a move elsewhere.
Being that Penn State was on the radar, they could be considered once again as Alfano looks to potentially re-open his recruitment. According to Lions247’s Tyler Donohue, Alfano has spent “significant time at Penn State during his recruitment.” That could factor into his decision of where he ends up next if he does, in fact, plan to leave Bama behind.
