After four preseason games in the NFL, former Penn State football legend Trace McSorley has apparently earned himself a spot with the Baltimore Ravens.

Going from being an All-Time passing leader for Penn State football to becoming a roster hopeful for the Baltimore Ravens is quite the change of pace for Trace McSorley. He can come to Happy Valley and will forever get a hero’s welcome for as long as he lives.

As he now plays in Baltimore for the Ravens though, the vibe is quite different. Sixth-round draft picks typically don’t get praised when they enter the NFL. While McSorley had his new fanbase sort of excited for what he brings to the table, there were surely more doubters surrounding him.

During his combine days back in the winter, teams didn’t even want to look at McSorley as a passer — instead, they wanted him to run routes as a wideout. While McSorley understood the circumstances, it was definitely something that was going to take some getting used to.

Fortunately, McSorley ended up in perhaps the best-case scenario for himself. He would get drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, who just drafted a similar prospect in Lamar Jackson just a season ago. Like McSorley, Jackson was also doubted for his passing abilities.

The Ravens were believers in Jackson’s quarterbacking abilities though. But they also wanted to get creative with him. Before he won the starting job with the Ravens midway through the year, Jackson was getting some reps as a ‘special weapon,’ which confused defenses.

Now, they might look to do the same with McSorley on board as well. The former Penn State quarterback was far from a lock to make the team, but his final two weeks of the preseason proved that he belongs. McSorley deserves a shot. And according to Ravens’ coach John Harbaugh, he will get it. We just don’t know exactly what his role will be.

It’s just a matter of strategy right now,” Harbaugh said when revealing that McSorley has earned a spot on the final 53-man roster. “It’s something Eric [DeCosta], and Ozzie [Newsome] will talk a lot about over the next few hours.” Chances are, McSorley is a third-string quarterback. But he also becomes a weapon in special packages as well, as expected.
