Penn State football snagged another four-star running back on Monday with Keyvone Lee’s commitment.

What is better than having just one four-star running back committed and ready to play for Penn State football? Having two four-star running backs committed and ready to play for the Nittany Lions! That’s right — Ja’Juan Seider has done it once again.

On Monday, five teams were interested in finding out where Clearwater, Florida four-star running back Keyvone Lee was headed. With choices between UCF, Florida, LSU, Florida State, and PSU, Lee set up an Instagram Live press conference to make his commitment decision.

Before Monday’s virtual press conference even happened though, Lee was assumed to be headed to Happy Valley anyway. With eight Crystal Ball Predictions on 247 Sports’ recruiting platform, every writer and scouting analyst involved guessed that the Nittany Lions were Lee’s choice.

Just because that was assumed, didn’t mean it was going to be a lock though. After all, Penn State did just land a verbal commitment from another four-star running back hailing from Florida in Caziah Holmes just weeks before Lee’s planned announcement.

That didn’t necessarily shift everybody’s predictions to get moved elsewhere, but there was a possibility that Lee could re-route his path to college in order to find a better situation for himself. Or, he could create an absolute favorable situation by adding himself to the Lions’ roster to create a solid one-two punch alongside Holmes.

Clearly, with his decision coming weeks after Holmes’ commitment, Lee is quite interested in working and competing against the other four-star Florida all-purpose back.

Complimenting Holmes’ game

This season, the Nittany Lions are going to do something different with the running backs they have on board. Before, they were more of a bell-cow type of backfield. With Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders, the Lions were more than willing to give them a majority of the workload.

This year though, Penn State is expected to roll with more of a committee approach, considering they have four young solid backs who could contribute on game day right now. This unit becomes the test run, then Holmes and Lee will come in next season and prepare for their shared production out of the backfield as well.

While Lee and Holmes will be competing for carries beyond 2020, it is necessary to note that these two running backs are not the same. Holmes, who is five-eleven, 179-pounds is recognized as an all-purpose back who is best known for his speed on the field.

Lee, on the other hand, stands at six-feet tall weighing 223-pounds. Clearly, the sizes are much different in this case, which makes it evident that they both have entirely different running styles. Keyvone Lee is by no means slow, but he’s undoubtedly more of a bruiser back than Holmes is.

However, it is necessary to note that despite the big-bodied size, Lee could be viewed as the complete package for a running back. 247 Sports’ John Garcia notes that he has solid “balance, vision, lean, power, change of direction and acceleration.”

Also, he runs with an edge, which makes it hard for defenders to bring him down. Meanwhile, Holmes is the type of back who will kill a defense with his speed, which creates a favorable situation as he becomes the change of pace back. Future Penn State opponents are surely going to have their hands full going against these two as they enter the 2020 class as Top-20 prospects at the position.
