Penn State football defensive end Jayson Oweh is preparing for a breakout season in the eyes of his teammates.

It’s hard to predict how a football season can go in the NCAA for specific players. Being that every team possesses so many prospects within the locker room, it’s tough to make educated guesses on what can happen truly. Unless of course, you’re in attendance for every practice.

For the outsiders looking in — you can only predict so much. Maybe Penn State football wins enough games to go to the playoffs — perhaps they don’t. Predicting wins and losses is one thing, but is predicting a potential breakout star in the offseason all that difficult?

It can’t be as long as you see the progression first hand at practice. Granted, training camp is much different from playing in a stadium on a Saturday, but for those players on the field, it isn’t too hard for them to make their pick at a player who is going to break out this season potentially.

Recently, the Centre Daily Times had the opportunity to speak to close to a dozen Penn State football players over the last couple of days. And instead of having those eleven players talk about themselves, they were asked to name their choice of a breakout player for 2019.

Many names were picked — but no name was mentioned more than Sophomore defensive end, Jayson Oweh. With only four appearances during his Freshman season, Oweh hasn’t had the opportunity to make a name for himself in Happy Valley. This year though will be a different story.

A few quotes regarding Oweh:

"“Coming off his redshirt year, just a freak athlete in the weight room. Freakishly athletic. He’s more comfortable with the defense. I think he’s going to have a great year.”“I’d pick Jayson Oweh because people don’t know about him yet. He has freakish ability. You’ll see first game.”“He’s just a freak athlete and has a lot of potential. This is going to be a big season for him.”“The guy’s just a freak athlete. He’s ridiculously fast and damn good. So we’ll be watching for him for sure.”“The dude’s a freak of an athlete.”"

It seems like we got quite a bit of a trend going here. The six-foot-five-inch, 255-pound pass rusher has really established himself as a ‘freak’ within the Penn State defense. Knowing his big-bodied size, and surprising quickness, it shouldn’t really shock anybody to know that Oweh surprises his peers here in August.

dark. Next. Yetur Gross-Matos appears in 2020 Mock Draft

Penn State has an excellent defensive line, and they were shocked to find out just how productive Junior defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos could be in 2018. With over eight sacks and 20 tackles for a loss, Gross-Matos established himself as one of the nation’s most intriguing defensive ends in football. Now, Oweh could be on the same path to stardom. His teammates already see it. Soon, the entire Big Ten and NCAA will as well.
