Former Penn State football linebacker Sean Lee can’t escape the injury bug as he suffered another setback at Dallas Cowboys training camp.

Injury concerns have been surrounding former Penn State football linebacker Sean Lee for the past few years now. The once-dominant linebacker for the Dallas Cowboys has now become the motivational leader who will take a step back to play second-string behind a promising young prospect. It seemed like the Cowboys were ready to move on from the former Lions’ standout, but Lee was willing to do all that he could to keep Dallas’ front office happy.

Therefore, Lee re-structured his deal to become financial friendly just so he could stay with the Cowboys, where he’s played for the last nine seasons. According to The Cowboys Wire’s K.D. Drummond, Lee is set to make $2 million in base salary, rather than the original $7 million.

Had he not taking a lesser deal, the Cowboys could’ve realistically closed the door on the Lee era. However, a mutual understanding made it easy for both parties to come to an agreement. Lee got a hot start to his career with the Cowboys early on, but a torn ACL derailed his entire 2014 season.

Typically, an injury like that can affect a player’s production moving forward, but Lee beat the odds. For 2015 and 2016, he notched career-high tackle totals, but the following season is when he began to see a dip in his defensive production.

In 2017, Lee would account for 101 combination tackles. Not bad considering he only played in 11 games. But the 11 games became a major concern since it was evident Lee’s injury issues were growing even worse. The Cowboys played it smart and drafted his successor in Leighton Vander-Esch, but they still wanted to hold onto Lee as insurance. Unfortunately, though, the insurance continues to have a hard time remaining healthy.

Lee deals with another setback

Knee and hamstring injuries have been a concern for quite some time now for Sean Lee. On Tuesday, he suffered yet another setback during his tenth training camp with the Dallas Cowboys. The good news is that the former Nittany Lions linebacker doesn’t seem to be going through anything too serious.

But the bad news is that this could end up being a reoccurring problem this year for him. Lee’s best days are clearly behind him in the NFL, but he has 2019 to prove he can still be a reliable linebacker. It won’t be easy though with all of the injuries piling up.
