Penn State football: Trace McSorley to earn more reps with Ravens
Former Penn State football quarterback Trace McSorley is expected to get more reps with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.
Injuries in the offseason are highly unfortunate. Sometimes though, injuries to one player can benefit another who is fighting for a spot on the roster. A couple of months ago, the Baltimore Ravens selected a quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft, which happened to be the second quarterback selection for them in two seasons.
Last year, they spent a high pick on Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, making him the final pick of the first round in 2018. This year, they waited a bit longer as they took Penn State football’s Trace McSorley in the sixth round. Jackson is guaranteed a starting role as the 2019 season approaches. McSorley, on the other hand, isn’t even a lock to make the final roster at this point.
It won’t be easy for McSorley to make the Ravens. With an experienced veteran such as Robert Griffin III sitting behind Jackson, McSorley surely has to earn his spot on the team despite being a draft pick. Not every team will roll with three quarterbacks when the final 53-man roster is submitted. Therefore, McSorley will have to make a strong case for a spot this offseason.
Lately, McSorley has lucked up in Baltimore. Not only is his versatility winning him opportunities to prove his worth outside of the quarterback position — but now he is going to earn more reps because of an unfortunate injury to the backup, Griffin. On Saturday, the bad news in Baltimore broke out that Robert Griffin was expected to miss some time moving forward because of a hairline fracture to his thumb.
The season hasn’t begun yet, but Griffin’s four-to-eight week timetable could cut into the beginning of the NFL season. At that point, McSorley could be locked into the backup role if the Ravens feel confident enough to make that happen. Now, there’s always a chance the Ravens could bring in an experienced veteran to hold the clipboard for those missing weeks instead, but that still gives McSorley a bit of an advantage.
At the end of August, McSorley could realistically have more than one duty on the Ravens offense. In the past, they have shown they are open to having multiple quarterbacks on the field at once, as they like to utilize select passers’ versatility. Seeing as though Baltimore views McSorley as a ‘jack of all trades’ type of player, he might end up on the roster regardless of others injuries or not. However, Griffin’s absence will surely benefit McSorley at this point.
