An injury-riddled career must’ve left Jonathan Holland with no choice but to hang up his cleats ahead of the 2019 Penn State football season.

Being a student-athlete is a tall task to ask for. The hard work and dedication that goes into studying both playbooks and classroom textbooks is surely difficult. It’s not easy for college football players to stay on top of their game, especially while attending a major University and playing for the Penn State football program.

For an athlete, it must be a satisfying feeling to watch it all pay off in the end. But if the results don’t come out as desired, it could be daunting. One way a college football player could be mentally and physically defeated is dealing with injuries throughout the course of their playing careers. Rehabbing and coming back from an injury is hard enough to deal with.

Then mix in the fact a player has to stay on top of their academics as well, and you’ve got a difficult situation. Some players get through it — others, well, their body doesn’t hold up. That’s percisely what’s been going on with Penn State tight end, Jonathan Holland.

Holland joined the Nittany Lions back in 2015 as a three-star tight end prospect. During his freshman season, he took the year off by redshirting. And in 2016, he was nothing more than a depth player. By 2017, he was able to produce his first stats as a backup, but would only appear in four total games, where he caught three passes for a total of 16 yards.

The following year, Holland appeared in only three games and caught seven passes for 114 yards. There was no word on Holland’s future with the Nittany Lions, but questions were raised about his senior season as Holland was absent from the Blue-White game in the spring.

At the time, Holland was still on the roster, but nobody knew for sure whether he would play for Penn State in 2019 or not. While Holland is enrolled at the University for graduate school, it seems as though his time on the gridiron is finished.

As Penn State released the 2019 roster on Tuesday, Holland was absent from the chart. It seems as though injuries have gotten the best of him. And at this point, Holland will continue to work on the next phase of his life, which doesn’t seem to include football.
