Penn State football lands their 20th commit for the 2020 class
Penn State football continues their hot streak as they landed another commitment for the 2020 class.
The start to the month of June was a strange one for Penn State football. Their 2020 recruiting class was beginning to collapse, no thanks to four de-commitments in a matter of a couple of weeks. Many lost hope, but James Franklin and company remained calm, cool, and collected.
De-commitments aren’t great, but they don’t make or break an organization roughly about a year before it is signing time. That’s what Penn State tried to preach when they were losing prospects, but everybody wanted results, not potential false promises.
Fortunately, the Nittany Lions didn’t bat an eye. They continued to stay the course and put faith in their staffers and potential prospects. Now, that shaky start to June is nothing to get worried about — because lately, Penn State has been on fire, landing commits left and right.
The start to July has been a promising one. Penn State landed a handful of prospects starting with wide receiver, Parker Washington. About an hour after Washington’s commitment, three-star cornerback Joseph Johnson announced that he would be coming in 2020 as well.
Following both Washington and Johnson’s commitment, a dual-threat quarterback named Tyler Warren announced he would join the Nittany Lions next season as well but a position change was in his future. Regardless of where he plays, his commitment was still beneficial as he became the first tight end for the 2020 class. That left the Nittany Lions with a total of 19 prospects so far. Then, on Friday, they landed their 20th with defensive end, Bryce Mostella.
The three-star defensive end hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He’s had interested from multiple top teams within the Big Ten including Ohio State, Michigan, and Iowa — but at the end of the day, both the coaching staff and academics at PSU won over the prospect.
During an interview with 247 Sports’ Allen Trieu, Mostella made it clear that it didn’t take long for him to buy into the coaching staff in Happy Valley. And once he built up a trust with the staff, he moved on to find out just how excellent the academics are as well, which ultimately won him over.
With Penn State’s 20th prospect joining the 2020 class, they still remain ranked 10th within the NCAA. Although they are struggling to get over that hump in the rankings, it is necessary to note how far they have come over the last few weeks. Before, they dropped down close to 30 in the ranks. Now, they are top ten as they continue to build.
