The Penn State football program kicked off their weekend right by acquiring two verbal commitments from 2020 prospects.

Happy Valley can finally be somewhat happy again as the Penn State football program picked up two verbal commitments heading into the weekend. One of which happens to be a four-star recruit. The other, he’s a three-star prospect.

Roughly around 7:30 PM is when Penn State and the rest of the nation received the news about cornerback, Ji’Ayir Brown’s decision to join Penn State for next season. Then about an hour later, another one came in. Considering the recruitment struggles that occurred over the last few weeks or so, it’s refreshing for the Nittany Lions to see two to more prospects making a promise to the program, without receiving any news about another player backing out as well.

We won’t go as far as to say the Nittany Lions are in great shape once again, but they definitely saw an increase in the stock of the 2020 recruiting class.

With the idea of having four-star guys like Grant Toutant, Aaryn Parks, and Josh Moten, the Nittany Lions peaked as high as having the 15th-best recruiting class for next year. However, after those three de-committed, PSU dropped as far as 25th in the ranks, according to 247 Sports.

A brief look at who joins the 2020 class

Three-star cornerback Ji-Ayir Brown kicked the weekend off right by making his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions. The Trenton, New Jersey native, enters the Division I program coming out of a JUCO program at Lackawanna Community College. The six-foot, 203-pound prospect is labeled as a corner, but could also get moved back to safety, if necessary.  With offers from both Maryland and Kent State, Brown couldn’t help but choose the Lions after his visit meeting with the coaches, which impressed him enough to say he is “100-percent committed to Penn State.”

Not to steal Brown’s shine or anything, but four-star wide receiver Jaden Dottin gave it about an hour before he announced his commitment as well. Coming out of Suffield, Connecticut, the six-foot-three inch, 170-pound wideout adds to a stellar receivers unit, that may be a bit unproven right now but has a ton of potential and upside heading into the 2019 season.

By the time Dottin and Norval Black (another 2020 wideout) come to Happy Valley next season, the Nittany Lions receiving core might already be established as a solid one. Those two could take the unit to the next level. So with the two commitments on Friday night, where exactly do the Penn State Nittany Lions rank in terms of their 2020 recruiting class?

Next. Aaryn Parks set to visit a rival. dark

As stated before, they were 25th after the few losses. Now, they are improved to being the 20th best in the nation for now, according to 247 Sports. Although Rivals didn’t give the Nittany Lions the same generous boost, they currently rank 24th on their list, as opposed to 20th.

So there’s still some work to do for the 2020 class, but at least the Nittany Lions are beginning to find their way again after some recent hiccups. Maybe after another busy weekend, they can pick up a few more commits to really get this 2020 class rolling.
