Although he’s already a hard commit to Miami, 2021 running back Thad Franklin is set to visit the Penn State football program this weekend.

Last October, Chaminade-Madonna Prep running back Thad Franklin decided he didn’t want to leave the state of Florida for college. Therefore, he committed to the University of Miami to become their top running back for the 2021 recruiting class. Although he’s made a verbal commitment to the Hurricanes, the Penn State Nittany Lions aren’t backing down.

This weekend, Florida native Thad Franklin will travel up North to take an unofficial visit to Happy Valley. As Penn State searches for their next pair of running back recruits for years to come, they are trying to sway Franklin away from the ACC. The Penn State football program is in for a busy weekend as they host several recruits, one of which happens to be Franklin’s teammate.

According to Penn State’s Head Coach James Franklin, he’s doing all he can to try and bring in more talent from the State of Florida. As they are home to many talented Division I athletes, Franklin sees this as a prime opportunity to keep on building beyond the 2020 class.

“I think whenever you’re able to go into an area like Florida and start to get some guys, it’s going to open up some opportunities for you, because there’s just so many Division I players in that state,” Franklin told 24/7 Sports’ Tyler Donohue.

Franklin has yet to get a ranking from recruits, but that shouldn’t lead anybody to believe that he’s not worth the scouts time. According to Hurricanes’ writer Stefan Adams, the Miami commit just hasn’t been active in the camp circuit. Adams is led to believe that Franklin in a four-star recruit ‘at the least.’ While it’s been made clear that Franklin wants to go to Miami, there’s still plenty of time left in his recruiting process for things to change.

Considering that Miami is loaded up in their backfield already for years to come, Franklin could be getting himself into a tough competition for snaps and carries. Some players tend to like that in-house competition, but sometimes that can lead them to look elsewhere as well. We’ll see how much of an impact Happy Valley has on the Junior running back after this weekend.
