Braden Halladay, son of legendary MLB pitcher Roy, was selected in the 32nd round of the MLB Draft. However, he will honor his commitment to Penn State Baseball.

The last two years haven’t been easy for the family of legendary Major League Baseball pitcher, Roy Halladay. After getting involved in a horrific plane accident, Halladay suddenly passed away back in November of 2017. Knowing how much he meant to the world of baseball, the sports community as a whole came together and acknowledged the impact Roy Halladay had on the game.

Since the unfortunate accident, both of Halladay’s former pro teams haven’t forgotten about their late legend. Any chance the Philadelphia Phillies or the Toronto Blue Jays get, they find a way to honor “Doc” Halladay. The Toronto Blue Jays latest gesture was a big one as they tributed their late, great pitcher by inviting his son into the organization.

Typically in sports, the number of a player is one of the most important things. It’s their identity, and most of the time it has sentimental value. With the Phillies, Doc Halladay was recognized by the number 34. With the Blue Jays, however, he separated identities. There, he wore number 32. So when the 32nd round of the 2019 MLB Draft approached, the Blue Jays figured there was only one true way to go about their selection.

That’s to make the call to Braden Halladay, the son of Roy. Braden won’t wear number 32 for the Blue Jays, as Toronto retired the uniform number during opening day of this season. And after finding out he was selected, Halladay actually made it clear he wouldn’t play for Toronto at all. Instead, he will honor his commitment to Penn State Baseball, as expected.

Braden Halladay understood the circumstances and felt grateful for the Blue Jays’ decision to make him a part of the orginization via the 32nd round. Although it would be amazing to see Halladay play for Toronto’s organization right off the bat, the young right-handed pitcher will honor his commitment to Penn State, and play for the Nittany Lions this season.
