The Penn State Nittany Lions were expected to get an upgrade at wide receiver with Florida State transfer, George Campbell.

Penn State was looking to get a significant upgrade at wide receiver this season with George Campbell. The former five-star recruit didn’t quite hit his stride down south with the Florida State Seminoles, so he was looking to finish out his collegiate career up North. Back in February, it was reported that George Campbell was set to join the Nittany Lions at Penn State, but it seems as though a last-minute change of heart occurred. Now, Campbell will transfer elsewhere.

According to The Tampa Bay Times’ Bob Putnam, Campbell has decided to re-route his transfer to West Virginia, rather than Penn State. Why exactly? Well, the reasoning is still unclear. However, Campbell’s uncle, Ahmad Jackson confirmed that the news is official on Tuesday as messaged Putnam on Twitter, letting him know that his transfer to West Virginia is a “done deal.” He also added that Campbell had a one-way flight to Morgantown Tuesday morning.

A change of heart leads Campbell to West Virginia

“Someone said I fell off, oh I needed that… Glad to be home,” Campbell tweeted on Tuesday night after the news broke that he was in fact, headed to play with the Mountaineers. Though Campbell was a five-star recruit out of High School in 2015, his career in the NCAA has contained a ton of hurdles. He redshirted his Freshman season, then struggled to stay healthy and productive when he finally was able to get on the field with the Seminoles during the last couple of seasons.

Campbell believed a new setting would be precisely what he needs to re-ignite his dominance at the college level, and Penn State was the place he planned on doing that. As a graduate transfer, Campbell was set to become the Nittany Lions’ oldest receiver for a season. Now, the idea is just an afterthought as Campbell has been persuaded to take his talents to West Virginia.
