After appearing in 99 games at the pro level, former Penn State linebacker NaVorro Bowman calls it quits.

On Tuesday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers got a surprise visit from a former linebacker of theirs. Although he hasn’t suited up in San Francisco for over a year, he felt the need to show up to deliver some personal news to the franchise. NaVorro Bowman, former 49ers and Penn State Nittany Lions’ linebacker has decided to hang up his cleats and call it quits after eight seasons.

It sure does feel like a premature ending to a career that had tons of promise. Early on in during his playing days in San Fran, Bowman showed out with three Pro-Bowl seasons. In addition to popularity amongst the fans around the NFL, Bowman has also been acknowledged as a four-time First-Team All-Pro during his early years. Unfortunately, his professional career took a bit of a turn for the worst in 2014, when he suffered a season-ending injury.

Bowman would get back to his old ways the following year, but his 2015 effort would end up being the final straw of his dominance. In 2016, he only appeared in four games. In 2017, he managed to play in five games for the 49ers, before getting released and signing with the Oakland Raiders, where he finished off the last ten games of the season. In 2018, Bowman sat out.

While Bowman has left his mark on the 49ers franchise, his collegiate accomplishments shouldn’t go unnoticed. During his three short years with the Nittany Lions, Bowman made his mark on their defense as a Sophomore in 2008. As he appeared in 13 games, Bowman totaled for 106 tackles, four sacks, and an interception. He was an essential piece to Penn State’s Big Ten run.

As for his third and final season in the NCAA, Bowman surely left his mark on the field once again. He wrapped up that final year with 93 total tackles, 17 of which, were for losses. Bowman also had three sacks, two interceptions, and a touchdown.

His impressive stint at Penn State led Bowman to being a third-round draft pick in 2010, where he dominated alongside Patrick Willis on the San Francisco 49ers. Although his time ended abruptly, Bowman’s legacy in San Francisco and Happy Valley lives on.
