Penn State Football: Grades versus Rutgers
By Dylan Burd
Wide Receivers/Tight Ends
This was a game where the majority of Penn State completed passes were caught by freshmen. In fact, out of all the wide receivers/tight ends that caught passes, only one was caught by a non-freshman (DeAndre Thompkins, one reception for five yards).
K.J Hamler led Penn State in receiving with five receptions for 71 yards. Right behind him was true freshman Jahan Dotson, who’s really come on late in the season. He caught four passes for 58 yards. Aside from the one catch by Thompkins, Hamler and Dotson were the only wide receivers to catch passes.
In terms of the tight end position, Pat Freiermuth was once again impressive, showing that he has the potential to turn into one of the best tight ends in the country. He caught two touchdowns on three catches for 47 yards. Freiermuth now has six touchdowns on the year.
Justin Shorter played in this game as well, but he didn’t catch a pass. His only touch was a rush for nine yards. Juwan Johnson was once again out with an injury.
In terms of drops, Jahan Dotson dropped a short pass in the end zone, and Mac Hippenhammer dropped a pass as well. Other than that, there weren’t any bad drops by the Penn State receivers.
The Penn State wide receivers played well when the pass was thrown on target. There can’t be much fault on them for anything significant in this game.
