Penn State football will get Trace McSorley career win No. 30 Saturday. It’s time to give the quarterback his due for what he’s done for the program.

When Trace McSorley took the quarterback reins in 2016, Penn State football had compiled a record of 45-31 since 2009 and a record of just 14-12 in the first two years under James Franklin. The team hadn’t seen a 10-plus win season since Daryll Clark put up back-to-back 11-2 seasons in 2008-2009. Since McSorley took over, he’s gone 29-8. Some have given much of the credit for the wins to the players around him and others have said he’s part of a fantastic offensive system.

To those who say that and doubt him, I say McSorley deserves major credit for what this team has done over the last three years. Penn State went from a middling bowl team to a championship contender over his time. Despite the setbacks of a scandal and struggles on the offensive line, he willed this team to victory. All the playmakers McSorley had in his time at the starting helm were there when Christian Hackenberg was starting. The Nittany Lions barely finished above .500.

With McSorley, his dual threat ability and passing prowess, yes I said that even though the completion percentage won’t say so this year, makes him the greatest quarterback in Penn State history. Although the line has given him little time and the weapons around him haven’t been consistent this year, he’s been everything for this team. His record says it all.

Regardless off how the season ends, he has changed the trajectory of Penn State football. No other QB in the school’s history can say that, because there wasn’t a situation like McSorley’s. For a guy that was under recruited and left a better chance to start at Vanderbilt for Penn State, he should be respected as the list setter for the QB rankings. McSorley has gone out and smashed all previous quarterbacking records, this would just be the latest.

With three games remaining in his career, he has a chance to not only set the record but push it out a few games as well. He has the potential to finish with 32 victories, but it all starts with No. 30 against Rutgers. Here’s to hoping it’s No. 30 with little resistance and a performance fitting of the senior signal caller.
