Penn State Rush Defense (First Half)

Just like the dropped passes by the Penn State wideouts, the Nittany Lions rush defense had a second consecutive poor performance — in the first half, that is.  The Lions rush defense was gouged to the tune of 214 yards on 30 first half carries.

At halftime, Penn State made some slight adjustments to their defensive ends which made a significant impact.  “We were not spilling at the defensive end,” Franklin said after the game.  “So they were running some counter plays or power plays and our defensive end was getting up the field, and when that guard came to kick him, he was up the field and he was getting kicked out”

In the third quarter the Lions gave up a total -2 yards.

The Lions have been very good about following the “next game is our most important game” mantra, but there is probably a good chance that the Penn State players are keeping at least one eye on that team from Ohio who comes to Beaver Stadium at the end of the month.

With the way the Buckeyes have been tearing up the early portion of their schedule, Penn State is going to need to find a 60-minute defensive solution in the very near future.  Luckily for Penn State, the schedule should afford them the opportunity to fine-tune their efforts the next couple of weeks.
