Penn State Football: Week 2 Studs and Duds against Pittsburgh
By Corey Hunter
Penn State Wide Receivers
Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley was 14-for-30 for 145 yards, but that number could have easily been higher if not for quite a few dropped passes from his receivers. The weather conditions were not the greatest, but many of the passes were right on the money but dropped.
For the second straight week Juwan Johnson had a few catchable passes go through his hands, as did freshman sensation KJ Hamler. Hamler, however, made up with it by rushing for a 32-yard touchdown and catching a 14-yard laser from McSorley for another touchdown, so his drops were less obvious.
Another receiver that needs to make an impact catching the ball is DeAndre Thompkins. He had quite a few drops including what would have been an easy touchdown late in the second half. Just like Hamler though, Thompkins more than made up for his share of dropped passes by taking a Panthers punt 39 yards for touchdown.
Penn State fans have been spoiled the past few years with the elite wide receiver talent that has come through Happy Valley. Players like Allen Robinson, Chris Godwin, and DaeSean Hamilton possessed excellent ball-receiving skills. They had a knack of making the routine catches and even making circus-like grabs, too. Penn State has very young receivers with tremendous upside, but they need to start making more catches, even despite the weather!
