Penn State Football: Week 2 Studs and Duds against Pittsburgh
By Corey Hunter
Cornerback – Amani Oruwariye
Another week…another interception for Amani Oruwariye. Last week, Orwariye’s interception sealed the dramatic win for Penn State. Against Pitt, his pick thwarted a drive that was looking like it would result in points.
Coach Franklin said the Oruwariye just has a knack for finding the ball. “Amani just continues…the ball likes Amani. I’ve been around guys like that my whole career where they just seem to be around the ball and makes plays on the ball.”
Oruwariye has been coming into his own since becoming a starter last season due to the leg injury to John Reid. The redshirt senior now has seven career interceptions, and he’s the first person to record an interception in back-to-back games since he pulled off the feat last year in games against Indiana and Northwestern.
Next week Penn State squares off against Kent State. Two years ago when the Golden Flashes invaded Beaver Stadium it was Oruwariye who recorded his first interception and first interception for a touchdown. Can lightning strike twice? Either way, Oruwariye has made quite a reputation for himself as a shutdown cover corner. His potential NFL draft stock continues to skyrocket.
In scoring 51 points there’s bound to be lots of players that could have made the “Studs” list, including DT Kevin Givens, LB Micah Parsons, WR/KR KJ Hamler, and QB Trace McSorley just to name a few.
It’s a lot more challenging to find players to put on the “Duds” list, but there were some glaring aspects of the Nittany Lions game that needs to be cleaned up before the start of Big Ten play. Who and what groups found their way on this dubious list?
