Penn State football will have a veteran presence on its offensive line in 2018.
Offensive line has quickly turned into a strongpoint for Penn State football over the past few seasons. Once an area of weakness, the current crop of linemen represent a good mix of veterans and talented newcomers. One player who has been a mainstay on the line and will serve as a leader up front is Steven Gonzalez.
Gonzalez started all 13 games last year and three starts the previous season. Overall, he’s played in 24 games for the Nittany Lions. He has found a home at left guard and will once again line up there as the starter this season.
A four-star recruit from New Jersey, Gonzalez was part of Penn State’s 2015 recruiting class. He was ranked as the No. 8 player from New Jersey and the No. 23 guard available. Gonzalez held offers from Michigan State, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and Virginia, among others. His final decision came down to Penn State and Ohio State before ultimately choosing the Nittany Lions.
Gonzalez sat out as a redshirt freshman in 2015 before seeing the field in 2016. He was one of the first reserves off the bench in 2016 before securing a starting job last year.
He was a very important player for the Nittany Lions in 2017 and was a first-team All-Big Ten selection.
The offensive line can often get overlooked, but the success of an offense starts up front. Gonzalez has been a consistent force on the line for the Nittany Lions and will be looked to as a key player in 2018.
