Penn State football had another player selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected the hard-hitting safety in the fifth round.

Yet another former Penn State football player has been taken by an NFL team in the draft. Safety Marcus Allen became the latest Nittany Lion to hear his name called. The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Allen with the 11th pick in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Allen could have left college last year to head to the NFL, but he decided to stick around for his final season in Happy Valley. He had a very decorated collegiate career, earning awards such as: Freshman All-American, honorable mention All-American and All-Big Ten.

The talented defensive back left Penn State ranked as the fifth-leader tackler in school history with 321. In his final collegiate game, he made seven stops against Washington in the Fiesta Bowl and was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player.

Heading into the draft, Allen really wasn’t being considered as an early-round selection. However, he had a strong workout at the combine and quickly shot up draft boards.

In Allen, the Steelers are getting a hard-hitter who has a nose for the football. He can get burned sometimes by his style of play choosing to go for the big play instead of just making the stop. However, that’s something that an NFL coaching staff can work with.

He’s got a great build for a safety and brings the physical type of style that NFL teams love. The Steelers did some purging of the secondary in the offseason meaning he might get a chance to play early.
