Penn State football will use the sale of alcohol to get the crowd loud and rowdy for the annual Whiteout

The annual Whiteout at Beaver Stadium has become known as one of the toughest environments to play in. Over 107,000 screaming fans, dresses in a sea of white, makes things difficult on opponents. Just ask Michigan and Ohio State, the two most recent victims of the Whiteout. While the atmosphere is already crazy, Penn State has decided to up the ante and make it over the top.

As an experiment during the 2018 season, alcohol will be sold inside of Beaver Stadium for the Whiteout. Although not officially announced yet, it’s a good assumption that the Whiteout will occur on September 29 when the Ohio State Buckeyes roll into town.

Fans played a key role in creating an awesome atmosphere back in 2016 when the Buckeyes were the opponent. Ohio State was ranked No. 2 in the nation, but Penn State used the energy from the crowd to help fuel the major upset.

Last year against the Wolverines, the crowd was once again loud and crazy, helping to lead the Nittany Lions to victory.

A school source explained the reasoning behind the decision for this year.

"“Since the Whiteout is traditional a night game, fans spend the entire day fueling themselves with a variety of liquid options. Why should they stop once the game kicks off? Alcohol will make the crowd even louder and cause the atmosphere to be even more harsh for the opponent.”"

There’s already been talk about serving alcohol inside of Beaver Stadium as part of the expansion plan. Starting with one game this season will be a good way to test and see how it goes. The university has already started alcohol sales at concerts held at Beaver Stadium and the Bryce Jordan Center.

When asked if there would be a limit that each patron can consume, the school source had a quick response. “Heck no, the drunker they get, the louder and more into the game they’ll be.”

Obviously, there will be no sales to anyone under the age of 21. Also, all current students, no matter their age, will be prohibited from buying any alcohol inside the stadium.

The Penn State coaching staff weighed in on the decision and appeared to be a big fan of it. One coach was quoted as saying,  “I can’t wait to see Urban’s reaction to this. We all know that he already complains about the Whiteout crowd. Now he gets a crowd that’s going to be totally wasted!”

Of course, while this would probably be a popular decision among many, it absolutely won’t happen, at least not this year.
