Penn State will look to finish the 2018 recruiting cycle strong on National Signing Day

Considered an unofficial holiday for many, National Signing Day is one of the biggest days on the calendar for college football programs and fans alike. It’s a chance for each school to build for the future by bringing in the best available talent. It’s a day where the top high school players in the country get to see their dreams of landing at a collegiate program realized.

Signing Day this year falls on Wednesday, February 7. However, it doesn’t quite carry the same feeling as previous years due to the early signing period that took place in December. The majority of top targets already signed to their college choices.

Head coach James Franklin and the Nittany Lions reaped the benefits of the early signing period by getting 22 total players to sign. That’s all but a full class, but there is still some room for a few more recruits to sign to play in Happy Valley.

Heading into National Signing Day, Penn State is ranked as the No. 4 class according to 247Sports.   The class is comprised of three five-star and 11 four-star recruits. It’s one of the best in Penn State history.

Franklin came to Happy Valley with the reputation of being a great recruiter, and the 2018 class solidifies that. He was able to go into non-traditional recruiting regions for Penn State (Texas and Florida) to pull in recruits. He also has continued his “Dominate the State” mantra by singing two of the best recruiting in Pennsylvania — Micah Parsons (No. 1 in PA, No. 5 overall) and Zach Kuntz (No. 3 in PA, No. 149 overall).

Despite having its 2018 recruiting class nearly finalized, there are still some things to watch for Penn State on Wednesday.

Wide receiver Shaquon Anderson-Butts is the only committed Penn State target that didn’t sign during the early signing period. He’ll have a chance to officially sign with the Nittany Lions on Wednesday, but there’s a chance that doesn’t happen.

The two uncommitted names to watch on Wednesday as far as Penn State is concerned are offensive tackle Rasheed Walker and wide receiver Solomon Enis. Walker is a four-star recruit from Maryland and ranked No. 65 overall. Enis (the son of Penn State great Curtis Enis) is a four-star recruit and the No. 2 prospect from the state of Arizona.

Both players have the Nittany Lions as one of their top choices heading into National Signing Day and will give Penn State fans something to pay attention to on Wednesday. Walker seems a likely land for the Nittany Lions, while Enis could end up at Utah.
