Secondary

No disrespect to some talented players on Maryland, but Penn State football’s secondary covered everyone like a blanket. Outside of D.J. Moore, QB Max Bortenschlager couldn’t find open receivers to connect with.

The Nittany Lions allowed the Terrapins passing game to hit routes underneath, but they never broke. The defense didn’t do anything spectacular but none of them got beat on a backbreaking play either.

Corner Grant Haley recorded a sack and a pass deflection. His numbers were the only significant defensive production to speak of in the back end. Troy Apke, Marcus Allen, Amani Oruwariye, Christian Campbell and Lamont Wade combined for 14 tackles and kept everything in front. Like I said earlier, the defensive secondary didn’t light up the stat sheet, but it made the plays it needed to, to win the game.
