Penn State football commits’ performances in Week 13
By Marty Leap
Week 13 of high school football season is in the books. So, here is VBR’s weekly look at how Penn State football commits performed over the weekend.
Throughout the 2017 football season I will take a look at how Penn State football commits perform in their high school football games each week. Even though high school football season is starting to wind down across the country, there is still plenty to talk about after this past weekend.
We will start with this past weekend’s top performer – running back Ricky Slade.
This marks the second consecutive week that saw Slade as the top performer among Penn State’s commits. Led by Slade, the now 9-3 Hylton Bulldogs upset previously undefeated Freedom 45-28 to advance in the playoffs.
Ricky Slade rushed for 320 yards and four touchdowns in Hylton’s victory on Friday night. Slade’s touchdown runs included an 80-yard run, as well as a 95-yard gallop. With this performance, Slade continues to show why he should earn a fifth star.
Staying in Virginia, offensive tackle Nana Asiedu and the North Stafford Wolverines were defeated by Brooke Point 22-20. With the loss, Asiedu and the Wolverines were eliminated from the playoffs finishing their season with an 8-4 record.
In New Jersey, a pair of Penn State commits had big nights.
Five-star wide receiver Justin Shorter and the South Brunswick Vikings earned a 21-10 playoff victory over Old Bridge to improve to 9-2 on the season. Shorter rushed for 92 yards and a touchdown, as well as recording a game clinching 69-yard pick-six with 1:15 remaining in the game.
Also in the Garden State, class of 2019 quarterback commit TaQuan Roberson went off in a 42-21 victory for DePaul Catholic over St. John-Vianney in the New Jersey Catholic League playoffs. Roberson threw a school record six touchdowns for the Spartans in their victory.
Back home in Pennsylvania, future Nittany Lion linebacker Charlie Katshir and the Cumberland Valley Eagles improved to 10-2 on the season with a 28-7 victory over Hempfield. Katshir finished the game with six receptions for 69 yards, including a pair of catches that converted fourth downs.
Safety Isheem Young and the Imhotep Charter Panthers defeated Cardinal O’Hara 40-7 to improve to 11-1 on the season. Young rushed for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also recording an interception in the game.
Offensive lineman Juice Scruggs and the 11-0 Cathedral Prep Ramblers return to action against Thomas Jefferson in a state playoff game this Friday. Linebacker Nick Tarburton was suspended for Pennridge’s 28-20 loss against Garnet Valley. The Rams start playoff action on Friday night and Tarburton is expected to return to action.
